How to Help Your Child Succeed in Test-Taking!

The first two steps are obvious. It starts in the classroom. First, your child needs to pay attention in class, take good notes, and ask questions if they don’t understand something. And, doesn't fall behind in classwork! Second, they need to STUDY what they have learned! Besides reading information in a textbook, they need to highlight and review the most critical information. Ask the teacher what will be on the test and study that.

Here are tips for your child:

The Night/Morning Before the Test

1. Choose comfortable clothes to wear.

2. Get adequate sleep and get up early enough so you are not rushed.

3. Eat a healthy breakfast.

4. Use positive self-talk to build confidence. "I can do this!"

During the Test

1. Breathe deeply if you are nervous.

2. Scan the entire test before you begin answering questions. That way you know what to expect.

3. Read each question carefully. Underline the critical information being asked.

4. Jot notes in the margin with important information. E.g. a math formula.

5. Answer the easiest questions first, then go back to the more difficult ones. (There are other strategies, but this one typically works best for most students.)

6. Take your time, but also pace yourself. Don’t spend too much time on one question and leave little time for the rest.

7. If you finish the test early, review all your answers!

After the Test

1. Evaluate what you did right and what you can do better.

2. Learn from your mistakes!
